Esalen Institute has the following position available:
Development & Sustainability Project Manager
Working closely with the Executive Director of Operations this position supports the mission and vision of Esalen Institute as part of a team that oversees Esalen’s property development; and by project management of its sustainability practices and objectives.
Responsibilities
- Property Development: participate in ensuring the successful planning of Property Development projects, including but not limited to: advance Esalen’s Guiding Sustainability Design Criteria in its building projects; contribute to the overall planning and budgeting of Esalen’s building and infrastructure development; perform feasibility studies and submit reports; develop and maintain contacts with consultants and contractors; project manage Esalen’s Long-Term Development Plan, including: keep Esalen’s LTDP current with the County and permits active; ensure Esalen continues fulfilling the LTDP mitigations and conditions of compliance as stipulated by Monterey County.
- Sustainability Coordination: provide strategic planning leadership for conversion to 100% renewable energy supply for Esalen within 5-10 years; track and regularly report on Esalen’s energy and water use, and wastewater effluent; work with managers and staff in each department to determine and successfully implement sustainability objectives.
- Establish and lead Esalen’s Sustainability Action Team (SAT): tasks of the SAT will include but not be limited to: oversee the completion of a property-wide Ecological Footprint Assessment; maintain documentation of Esalen’s sustainability studies and successful sustainability initiatives.
- Work with the Fundraising Department to pursue grants and awards.
- Establish sustainability feedback and suggestion process from community members, guests and other stakeholders and support/promote implementation and follow up.
- Establish and maintain a network of organizations, resources and experts to provide support and visibility for Esalen where appropriate.
- Work with Residential Education Department to further the development of in-house sustainability programs.
- Work with Esalen’s Programs Department to identify and propose sustainability workshops for seminarians.
- Accountable for contributing to the ongoing articulation of Esalen’s strategic vision.
- Reports directly to the Executive Director of Operations.
Education and Experience
- Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program; degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Design or Construction a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to manage and lead others.
- Two years or more direct experience working with renewable energy, green building and sustainability initiatives. Permaculture design and/or LEEDS certification a plus.
Additional Requirements
- Excellent organizational, management and communication skills. Able to multi-task and be extremely detail oriented.
- Excellent computer skills, including experience working with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and database applications. Experience using Macintosh systems preferred.
- Enjoy working with people; be friendly, helpful and patient.
Compensation and Benefits
Salary range is $2,000 to $2,400 per month, depending on experience, plus housing or housing allowance. We offer full health benefits and full Esalen property privileges in accordance to current policy. Community benefits include discounted weekend workshops, $70 in scholarship money per month, daily movement classes, ongoing visiting teacher and other in-house education programs, discounted bodywork and discounted retail sales.
